Step 1 - Submit to Search Engines

In our discussion of search software back in Part 1, we talked about getting your pages successfully crawled and then indexed in the search results.  You'll recall that search engine spiders crave and gobble up HTML text links.

Do you remember good ol' Mr. Spider-man?

Contrary to what he might say, you still should

help him find and index your site's pages.

So, search engine spiders actually go to work and crawl sites (metaphorically speaking) all over the Web prior to you even submitting your URL to the search engines.  Since you've already done the work up through Part 5, you can now search for your own site and see how many of your landing pages are indexed.  Here are other things to do if your site has already been crawled and indexed.  More...

To which search engines should I submit my URL?

You should submit to the Big Four search technologies - Google, Yahoo! Search, Ask, and MSN/Bing.   The tips and strategies we've imparted to you throughout EndoSEO.com SEO Central work extremely well across each of these big players.  This is awesome because you've already put in the time and energy that will yield a high ROI from the major traffic sources on the Web!

The Big Four are actually the suppliers of organic search technology for all of the widely-renowned, most commonly used search engines.   Observe the table below which shows the Search Technology Supplier and Syndication.

Big Four Suppliers Syndication
 Ask  Ask
   Excite
   Teoma
   Iwon
 Yahoo!  Yahoo!
   AltaVista
   AlltheWeb
Google   Google
   AOL Search
 Microsoft  Bing
   MSN.com

How do I submit my URL to search engines across the Web?

Firstly, the viable streams of traffic that'll actually be worth your while will come from the Big Four.  Keep in mind that Hitwise intelligence has shown that Google received 67.9 % of all U.S. searches in the four weeks ending April 26, 2008 whereas Yahoo! Search, MSN Search, and Ask.com brought in only 20.28%, 6.26%, and 4.17% respectively.

You should manually submit your XML Sitemap to Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and Ask.

There's no need to pay for automated URL submission services to smaller search engines or lesser known directories with low volume and low- to mid-grade traffic.  Spend your time and marketing resources wisely.  It's time to submit your site to the big guns of search!
