Step 3 - Other Back-end tasks

This is the last step before you submit your URL to search engines and directories.   In your web marketing journey up until this point, we've emphasized the importance of doing what's best for both site visitors and search engine spiders.   The first task is (1) for your visitors while the remaining tasks are (2) for assisting search robots.  More...

   1.  Enhance Visitor Experience:

  • Create Your Favicon

It's the miniature version of your logo (only 16 x 16 pixels), and it might not seem significant but it definitely matters on the social Web.  It's your brand and what people see in the browser bar, browser tabs, bookmarks menu, widgets, and virtually everywhere else.  More...

   2.  Help Search Engine Crawlers:

  • Describe your images on the back end

Now, it's time to make your site's code, your HTML elements, easier to read for search engine spiders.   You can drive more traffic to your site from image searches if you judiciously use the ALT and Title attributes to describe your site's images.

What's the ALT attribute?   It's alternative text for an image that's useful for helping search engine crawling, slow loading graphics, and users who don't have Adobe Flash installed.  More...

What's the Title attribute?   It's used for attaching a subtextual description to virtually any HTML page element.  Keep in mind that the Title attribute improves user experience and accessibility but is not that important for search engine indexing.  More...

Where do people search for images?   Google's indexing of images is, by far, the most comprehensive largely due to their Image Labeler initiative.

- Here is a Google image search for "milky way galaxy" -

- and here are the Yahoo! image results for the same search -

File naming does matter:  It's noteworthy to mention that you should try to incorporate keyword(s) into the filename of your image but don't overdo it.  Notice how some of the image filenames contain terms are separated by hyphens and or underscores.  It is better not to leave blank spaces in your filenames. Use a hyphen ( - ) or an underscore character ( _ ).  Next, we'll review how to properly use your ALT and Title attributes.  More...

 Piecing It All Together

Let's do an example using our made-up textbook business called Flashdiscounttextbooks.com.  We'll assume that we already created a killer landing page, providing the relevant context we just discussed.  Here's a glance at the source code after we optimize the filename, ALT & Title attributes, for an image of a book.  More...

     Clean up your HTML code

Since we're already on the topic of HTML code, it's wise to make sure that your code is valid and clean.  It should be reviewed to check that there are not any barriers to crawling and indexing.
